About these terms
These terms of service govern the household-goods moving and marine container shipping services We Move People (a PUC-registered, fully licensed and insured Hawaii household-goods carrier, operating from 270 Wakea Avenue Suite B, Kahului HI 96732) provides to customers on Maui, between the Hawaiian islands, and to West Coast mainland Pacific destinations. By signing a binding flat figure with us or paying the $245 deposit, you accept these terms. Hawaii state law and Maui County jurisdiction govern; any disputes are resolved in Maui County courts unless the federal interstate shipping authority applies.
The binding flat figure
Every quote Tyler Aiona writes and Kai Akamai signs is a binding flat figure. The number on the signed quote is the number on the final invoice — no per-pound reweigh, no Matson surcharge added later, no “the truck weighed more” back-end adjustment. If we miscounted at the walk-through and the actual inventory is substantially larger than what was quoted (more than fifteen percent over by cubic feet), we will tell you that on move-day and you decide whether to leave the overflow or pay a pre-disclosed per-cubic-foot rate to take it. We will never load and then surprise you with a higher bill.
Deposit and cancellation
The $245 deposit holds your move-day on the dispatch board and your sail slot with Matson or Pasha. Cancel more than seven days before the move-day and the full deposit is refunded. Cancel inside seven days and the deposit holds against your rebooked date at no forfeit. If a hurricane warning, harbor closure or carrier-side sail cancellation pulls your scheduled date, we rebook at no charge and absorb any Matson or Pasha rebooking fee on the carrier side.
Payment terms
On-island Maui moves: balance due at the unloading milestone, card or ACH or check. Off-island inter-island and mainland Pacific shipments: fifty percent of the post-deposit balance due at the loading milestone in Kahului, remaining balance due when the partner crew unloads at the destination address. We discount one percent if you pay the full balance by ACH at the loading milestone. No cash transactions over $1,000.
Cargo liability and insurance
Federal released-value baseline is $0.60 per pound per article with a nine-month claim window — this is the floor on every shipment we move. Full-replacement-value protection is an upgraded Matson or Pasha policy that we quote at the time of the binding figure (typically $250 to $450 for a one-bedroom mainland container). For high-value items (pianos, gun safes, koa heirloom pieces, artwork, surfboard quivers) we strongly recommend a separate scheduled-item declaration on the bill of lading. Claims are filed through Marisol Pang in the Wakea Avenue office; the federal nine-month window starts the day the container is unloaded.
What is not covered
Items you packed yourself (self-pack boxes) are covered for transit damage but not for internal-contents damage unless we inspected the pack before sealing. Perishables (food, plants, fluids) are not accepted on container shipments. Cash, jewelry, important documents, prescription medication and firearms should travel with you, not in the container. Live animals are not transported on household-goods containers; Nalani will refer you to a Hawaii-licensed pet transport service.
Harbor delays and weather
Matson and Pasha sail schedules are subject to Pacific weather conditions. We do not guarantee a specific sail date on the binding figure; we guarantee the next available sail after the date listed. If your container is loaded and the sail is delayed by weather, the container holds in the secure yard at OGG at no additional cost. We do not charge weather surcharges.
HOA and property access
For Wailea, Kihei, Lahaina, Kahului and other condo or HOA properties, you are responsible for booking the freight-elevator slot and providing us with the HOA contact for the certificate of insurance request at least seventy-two hours before move-day. If we arrive and access is not arranged, the on-site wait time is billed at $195 per hour. Nalani will handle the certificate of insurance paperwork from our side at no additional charge.
Disputes
If something goes wrong on a move, call Kai directly at the WMP desk. Most issues resolve inside one business day. Unresolved disputes go to Maui County civil court or to the Hawaii PUC complaint process. Interstate marine container shipping disputes fall under federal USDOT authority. We carry the regulatory bonding and insurance both require.
Changes
We may update these terms; the version in effect on the day you sign your binding figure governs your shipment. Last updated June 2026.
